A Letter from our new Associate Pastor
I am Fr. Cristian Raul Cuevas Jara. I was born on June 20, 1976 in Curicó, Chile. My parents are Luis and Sonia, my younger sister is Jimena, her husband is Miguel, and my nieces are Javiera and Catalina.
After a vocational process and feeling the call to the priesthood and consecrated life, I joined the Congregation of Priests of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Dehonians) in 1996. In February of 2000, after a year of novitiate at Maciel, Argentina, I professed my temporal vows. I studied at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, Faculty of Theology finishing my Religious Sciences degree in 2004. Then, I became part of the faculty of our formation house until 2016. In 2005, I professed my perpetual vows and on May 14 of 2006 I was ordained as deacon. On April 28 of 2007, I became a priest.
My pastoral work has been as a chaplain of San Juan Evangelista Catholic School, a Priest of the Sacred Heart’s elementary & high school, in Santiago, Chile, from 2007 to 2009. In 2010, I was in Rome for a year, continuing my studies so as to continue as part of the faculty of our Provincial Seminary. In 2011, I was sent to Sagrado Corazon Institute, also a Priest of the Sacred Heart’s elementary & high school, in San Bernardo until 2016, where I worked using my God given talents and strengthening my priestly vocation. As a member of my congregation, I worked as counselor and provincial treasurer.
During that time, as seminarian and now as a priest, I have done pastoral work in Catholic Schools and parishes, serving as a catechist, mission coordinator, spiritual director, etc. I was even a teacher and principal and those roles gave me the opportunity to develop different aspects of my personality and pastoral sense.
Because I believe I have been sent, I want to offer to the church what I have learned during my years of formation and ministry. Now I want to walk with my brothers and sisters, professing and giving testimony of our faith in Jesus Christ from my priestly ministry. That is why I want to do ministry in the Archdiocese of Chicago and do pastoral work celebrating the sacraments, working with immigration issues, forming pastoral ministers in the parish and school, and working together with the Spanish and English speaking communities in the Church. I leave everything in God’s hands. God bless you!
